Seeking excellent writers and editors to staff a publishing program with built-in national reach. We examine policy, politics, and theory with genuine curiosity and excel in a collaborative environment. Accordingly, all writing submissions are assigned ID numbers that maintain author anonymity throughout the entire review cycle. Editors selected may be onboarded as Managing, Copy, or Associate Editors.

Position OVERVIEW

Number of positions available: 10

Requirements:

  • Can, at minimum, commit for 6 hours per week for 3 months.
  • Can meet deadlines.
  • Has history of interest in policy, politics, economics, etc.
  • Must pass the practical skills assessment (providing comments on a sample submission by deadline).
  • Has any or all of the following managerial skills: compiling and corresponding with professional contacts, mentoring and supporting students, taking initiative on creative ideas, communicating effectively and openly with EIC.
  • Has any or all of the following publishing and distribution skills: editorial design (Adobe InDesign or similar), graphic design (Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, or similar), indexing academic articles.
  • Has academic or professional experience copyediting or editing in the following settings: newspaper/magazine staff, research foundation, research publication, debate organization, political communications staff.
  • Required documents: Resume and writing sample (3-10 pages). If and only if applying for multiple positions, brief letter stating order of preference.

What is YIP?

YIP stands for "Institute for Youth in Policy". The Institute for Youth in Policy conducts and communicates independent, high-quality research to improve nonpartisan education policy and practice. Working with policymakers, researchers, educators, community groups, and others, the Institute seeks to advance evidence-based policies that support empowering and equitable learning for each and every teen. Nonprofit and nonpartisan, the Institute connects policymakers and stakeholders at the local, state, and federal levels with the evidence, ideas, and actions needed to strengthen the education system from preschool through college and career readiness.

What does a typical day at YIP look like?

YIP's current operations are conducted entirely remotely, with a diverse team spanning over 7 time zones. We use 21st century tools like Slack to keep all team members in the loop about what's going on at any given time. All meetings are held virtually as of July 2021; however, we plan to expand our Chapters into schools across the country in hybrid and in-person models, adhering to CDC guidelines.

With regards to leadership structure, our operations are divided into four main "departments": Publishing, Programming, Networks, and Strategic Innovations; each team has a director and most departments have sub-departments. There are also smaller teams that handle our internal affairs: HR, Legal, Tech, and Finance. We are governed by a Board of Directors and meet with members of our Advisory Board on a monthly basis.
