Lucas Yang

Lucas Yang served as the Senior Vice President of Policy at YIP and is a high school student in the Washington DC-Baltimore Area. As a nationally-ranked debater, researching a diverse array of paramount topics and pressing issues has fostered his passion for public policy, economics, and politics.

In addition, he has been actively involved in his community over the past several years as the founder of a student-led organization dedicated to expanding resources, opportunities, and knowledge in the fields of economics, finance, business, and entrepreneurship. Prior to joining YIP, Lucas led numerous non-profits, think tanks, and policy organizations working with legislators and stakeholders on the federal, state, and local levels. Furthermore, he has graduated from the International Leadership Foundation's Youth Leadership Academy, working with the nation’s foremost AAPI leaders, and served as a Research Fellow at the International Socioeconomics Laboratory conducting socioeconomics research in NYC. He looks forward to continuing his work with YIP to advocate for effective, nonpartisan policy solutions to bridge gaps between different people while appreciating our diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, and political beliefs & affiliations!

During a time of heightened political tension and exacerbated ideological divides, policymaking based on the facts and evidence-based research is now more important than ever. Single decisions have significant impacts on millions of American families nationwide on a day-to-day basis. However, a combination of partisan behavior, internal pressure, and personal perspectives can lead to the detachment of data-informed policy away from legislation in Washington D.C. Consequently, it is paramount for research to be conducted not only analyzing the transition toward the use of 21st-century data, or lack thereof, but also reviewing voter opinions in local communities. With the midterm elections occurring tomorrow across the nation, the trajectory of America’s future for many years to come will be decided. Consequently, further inquiry on this subject is highly pertinent. Through a statistical lens, an examination of historical trends leads to a discussion of civic engagement today in the status quo. Furthermore, America’s global stance on the international stage plays a substantial role in providing vital context on where the country must move.
